Two kickers melted under pressure in prime time during Week 1. First we witnessed Panthers kicker Graham Gano hook a 50-yard field goal wide left, and on Sunday night Cardinals kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard game-winning field goal.
The timing was a little off during Catanzaro’s kick due to a bad snap and was shown several times in the aftermath of Arizona’s 23-21 loss to New England.
Despite the less-than-perfect snap, Catanzaro is taking full responsibility for the mishap.
“I’ve got to make the kick,” Catanzaro said, per ESPN. “Just a good old-fashioned miss. That’s on me. This game falls on my shoulders. I appreciate the opportunity that the offense gave me. It had a great drive down the field. I’ve got to make the kick.”
The long snapper on the play was rookie Kameron Canaday. Canaday acknowledged his snap on the Cardinals’ final play wasn’t ideal.
“It was a little low,” Canaday said. “I wish I could take it back, but I can’t. I am just going to have to move forward and focus on next week and improving.”
Both players expressed sorrow after loss and that will go far in Arizona’s locker room going forward as long as the two improve from the Week 1 loss.
“It’s on me,”Catanzaro said. “It’s not on Kam at all. It’s on me. That falls on my shoulders. That’s my fault.”
