Michael Phelps isn’t just a 23-time Olympic gold medalist. He’s also a die-hard Baltimore Ravens fan.
That’s why the legendary swimmer couldn’t hold his tongue when he caught a reporter wearing Steelers gear during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“Is that a Steelers?” Phelps asked the reporter. “Oh man. Golly. There we go, there’s some Ravens … man, Steelers … Football season is back.”
The Towson, Md., native was then asked about the Ravens-Steelers rivalry that boils the blood of any fan on either side of the line. Phelps said while he expects to beat the Steelers every year, he can’t help but respect the cutthroat nature of the bi-annual grudge match.
“I always think we’re going to beat Pittsburgh,” Phelps said. “That’s the obvious answer. But I think one of the cool things about that, we always play each other really hard, and as much as I’m not a Steelers fan, the games are really exciting and we get a lot of intense hits.”
Lesson learned: Don’t wear Steelers gear around arguably the best Olympian of all-time.
