Apparently, the second Monday Night Football game went on a little too long for Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera.
NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus reports that Rivera confessed in his Wednesday press conference that he could not stay awake for the entire game. The San Francisco 49ers pummeled the Los Angeles Rams 28-0, and it did not end until well after midnight on the east coast.
“Unfortunately, I stayed up and watched. And the reason why I say unfortunately is I fell asleep somewhere in the beginning of the fourth quarter,” Rivera said. “But I got to see three quarters of it.”
There wasn’t much to see. Backup 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem and safety Eric Reid was next to him. Besides that, starting 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert played an average game, Rams starter Case Keenum had a dismal outing and the 49ers were able to bottle up 2015 offensive rookie of the year Todd Gurley.
Some funny memes about Rivera falling asleep would be nice, but he has no reason to be ashamed about turning in a little early. There are few things more American than falling asleep on the couch while watching sports in the middle of the night.
