The next step in Cam Newton’s return to the Carolina Panthers’ lineup was taken on Thursday.
The Panthers quarterback was a full participant in practice. However, head coach Ron Rivera told the media that Newton has to be cleared by an independent specialist before he can suit up on Sunday, via The Associated Press’ Steve Reed.
Ron Rivera said Cam Newton is still in the concussion protocol. Still has to be cleared and following steps.

Rivera was asked if Newton would be restricted at all as a runner. He responded, “We are going to run our offense accordingly,” via ESPN’s David Newton.
Offensive coordinator Mike Shula said they do not want to take their quarterback out of his game.
“That’s his game,” Shula said to the media. “We will look at him and talk about it, but part of his game and what makes him so good is that. So if he’s cleared, well then …”
Running back Jonathan Stewart was also a full participant in practice.
