Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict’s aggressive play came under question in his team’s 35-17 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 6. Burfict was caught diving helmet-first at Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett’s knee during the game Sunday.
The league was already set to review that play before ESPN’s Mike Reiss drew into question another questionable action from Burfict in the game, posting a video to Twitter of the linebacker appearing to stomp on running back LaGarrette Blount’s leg following a goal-line carry.
ESPN’s Ed Werder reported Monday morning the Bengals are not expecting Burfict to receive any suspension and his punishment will likely result in a fine.
A Bengals source told Werder, Burfict’s punishment would amount to “a slap on the wrist for now.”
Burfict, of course, has a history of being penalized for foul play. He began this season serving a three-game suspension for on-field hits. Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis had to attended a disciplinary hearing with Burfict last February at the league office in New York City.
