The Cleveland Browns are parting ways with one of their biggest draft busts in franchise history.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns are trading former first-round pick Barkevious Mingo to the New England Patriots. Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reports the Browns received a fifth-round pick in return for Mingo.
Mingo’s career has been drastically underwhelming after he was taken sixth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. After a decent rookie season during which he recorded 42 tackles and five sacks, Mingo has a combined two sacks the past two seasons. He started in only two games last season, recording 18 tackles.
The Patriots are taking a flier on a talented prospect who clearly hasn’t panned out. They could afford some more depth in their front seven with star defensive end Rob Ninkovich is out with a torn triceps. The Patriots also have Jabaal Sheard, Chris Long, Shea McClellin and Trey Flowers on the outside.
The Browns added to their already impressive stockpile of draft picks by admitting defeat on Mingo. Here’s a list of all of Cleveland’s draft picks for the 2017 NFL Draft.
