The Dallas Cowboys found themselves in a bit of a tough spot early in their game against the San Francisco 49ers. After kicker Dan Bailey suffered a groin injury while warming up, safety Jeff Heath was going to be the team’s kicker for the rest of the game.
The Cowboys didn’t ask Heath to attempt a field goal, but he attempted 3 extra points, making 2. The miss sliced wide. Heath joked that he was a little nervous going into the situation, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported.
“I didn’t know how I was going to feel, but I was pretty nervous going in,” Heath said. “I don’t know why. I wanted to make them, obviously. I didn’t want to go out there and just look like an idiot, so I think I was a little nervous. Then with the rush, especially with this team, they have really big guys that rush the field goal, so I think I was kind of too fast on my first couple.”
Heath also pointed out that veteran tight end Jason Witten wasted no time giving him a hard time after he missed his extra point. But, Witten was joking and wound up praising Heath, stating he doesn’t know that Morten Andersen “has anything on Jeff Heath,” according to Archer.
“Hey, look, man, we saw Morten Andersen go into the Hall of Fame in Canton,” Witten said. “I mean, I don’t know that he has anything on Jeff Heath. This is pro football, going in there and doing a 33-yard extra point.”
