The Denver Broncos have ruled out one player while three other players are listed as questionable for their season opener Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers.
Wide receiver Bennie Fowler has been ruled out for the game with an elbow injury sustained while covering a punt during Denver’s preseason opener against the Chicago Bears. Depth tight end Jeff Heuerman (hamstring), offensive lineman Ty Sambrailo (elbow) and center Jason Ferentz (knee) are all listed as questionable to play.
It’s important to remember that the NFL has modified the way teams will list injuries. Gone is the “probable” label that signified a good chance a player would take the field. Now, only “questionable” and “doubtful” remain, adding more uncertainty to the former definition.
Ferentz and Sambrailo were limited participants in practice the past three days, while Heuerman was a limited participant on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sambrailo is a pivotal depth player and is listed as the primary backup for both tackle spots, while Ferentz is listed as the backup center on Denver’s depth chart. Heuerman is listed as the backup tight end behind Virgil Green.
Most importantly, it appears linebacker DeMarcus Ware will be good to go Thursday night. The veteran pass rusher has been a full participant in practice this week.
