The Denver Broncos placed defensive lineman Billy Winn on injured reserve Saturday after the sixth-year veteran tore the ACL in his right knee during the team’s preseason opener Thursday night against the Chicago Bears.
In a corresponding move, the Broncos signed rookie defensive lineman Nelson Adams, who was formerly with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Adams signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent from Mississippi State following the 2017 NFL Draft. He was released by the Steelers last week when the team signed cornerback JaCorey Shepherd to bolster its secondary. Adams recorded 25 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks during his final collegiate season.
Winn’s injury comes after the Broncos spent the offseason bolstering their defensive line. They signed defensive tackles Domata Peko and Zach Kerr to help beef up the defensive interior after the Broncos finished No. 28 against the run last season.
Winn joined the Broncos last season and recorded 19 total tackles in 16 games. He made two starts.
