Denver Broncos safety Darian Stewart wasn’t flagged for his helmet-to-helmet hit of Cam Newton during Thursday night’s season opening victory against the Carolina Panthers. Instead, Stewart’s wallet will face the consequences.
Stewart was fined $18,231 for this illegal hit that should have been flagged, according to ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

It wasn’t the only time Newton was hit high by a Broncos defender. That sparked speculation the Broncos were intentionally head hunting, which Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall vehemently denied.
“Just because we hit Cam in the head a couple of times, that doesn’t make us dirty,” Marshall told The Denver Post’s Nicki Jhabvala. “Look at some of the dirty plays in the league. There are a lot of dirty players, and that’s not our M.O.”
Dirty or not, Stewart paid a handsome fine for that hit.
