The Jacksonville Jaguars fired offensive coordinator Greg Olson and named quarterbacks coach Nate Hackett as his successor.
Many thought that if the Jaguars made such a change they would promote assistant head coach Doug Marrone, but as Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports, the team may have been keeping Marrone free to take over as interim head coach in the event that Gus Bradley is fired in the near future.
Marrone also coaches the offensive line, and La Canfora has a history of reporting on Marrone-related news. Marrone was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2013-14 before being ousted after a disastrous stint. He joined the Bills after serving as head coach at Syracuse.
The Jaguars are off to a 2-5 start and Bradley is on the hot seat. Team owner Shad Khan was a surprise attendee for Bradley’s Monday team meeting at the beginning of the week and after a blowout loss to the Tennessee Titans, the Jaguars made the move to part ways with Olson.
