It looks like Jamaal Charles’ return won’t happen this week.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday afternoon that the star running back “probably is not going to play,” according to The Kansas City Star’s Terez A. Paylor.
Charles is still recovering from his second torn ACL injury, sustained last October. Charles had rushed for 364 yards and 4 touchdowns in five games before the injury occurred.
The Chiefs will likely utilize a backfield timeshare featuring Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. Both were productive runners in relief of Charles last season. Ware rushed for 403 yards and 6 touchdowns, while West ran for 634 yards and 4 touchdowns. West was also useful in the passing game, catching 20 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown.
There doesn’t appear to be any sort of setback regarding Charles’ recovery. The Chiefs seem to be playing it safe with the 29-year-old tailback. After two ACL injuries, that’s probably the prudent approach.
