Is Philip Rivers one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL right now? Sure. Is he one of the greatest quarterbacks ever? That might be a bit of a stretch.
San Diego Chargers coach Mike McCoy doesn’t think so. The Chargers head coach was very complimentary of Rivers on Wednesday.
“Philip Rivers is one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game,” McCoy said, per the San Diego Union-Tribune. “He’s special. …He’s an even better human being.”
Rivers had a good individual season last year despite the Chargers going 4-12. The quarterback threw for a career-high 4,792 passing yards. He also tossed 29 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions, resulting in a 93.8 passer rating. The 13th-year QB ranks first in franchise history in career touchdown passes (281) and will likely pass Hall of Fame signal caller Dan Fouts this season to become the team’s all-time leader in passing yards. Rivers has 41,447 yards to Fouts’ 43,040.
McCoy certainly had a valid case for Rivers being the best Chargers QB of all time. The quarterback’s only rival in franchise history is Fouts.
As for Rivers being one of the best ever? The Chargers coach has every right to stick up for his franchise quarterback. Rivers ranks eighth in NFL history in career passer rating at 95.5. But the five-time Pro Bowler and 2010 NFL passing champ has some more accolades to garner to be considered one of the best quarterbacks ever.
