Zach Mettenberger’s tenure with the San Diego Chargers was short lived.
The Chargers released Mettenberger on Tuesday, per NFL.com.
Mettenberger’s odds of making the team figured to be dim after he did not play in San Diego’s third preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Chargers opted to trot out undrafted rookie quarterback Mike Bercovici instead of Mettenberger during the team’s 23-10 preseason loss.
Mettenberger was picked up by the Chargers after the Tennessee Titans waived him in March. The quarterback’s arrival in San Diego reunited him with Ken Whisenhunt — who coached him while with the Titans.
The 2014 sixth-round pick has played in 14 games in his career (all with Titans). Mettenberger has 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on his resume. Not good statistics for a quarterback looking for employment.
