The Miami Dolphins are having a brutal day. Heading into the fourth quarter, they trail the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 30-6 in an AFC wild-card matchup. But on an all-around embarrassing day, a play late in the third quarter takes the cake, and even the NFL is making fun of them on social media.
The Dolphins lined up to block a Chris Boswell field goal attempt trailing by a score of 23-6 and needing a big play to stay in the game. So defensive back Tony Lippett tried timing the snap and leaping the line of scrimmage to block the kick.
Unfortunately, he misjudged it. Badly.
Lippett left far too early and jumped over the long snapper before the Steelers had any intention of snapping the ball, drawing a 5-yard encroachment penalty in the process. That was enough to give the Steelers a fresh set of downs, and the Steelers soon punched it in for a touchdown that made it a 24-point game.
And even the NFL took to Twitter to take a shot at the Dolphins’ silliness.

The NFL normally plays it pretty conservatively on social media, though they’ve been bolstering their efforts of late. Still, this is slightly out of character for them, albeit funny.
