The New England Patriots need a victory over the New York Jets to clinch home-field advantage in the AFC on Sunday, but it appears that they’ll have to do so without their pass-catching specialist at running back, James White.
According to a report from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, White — who was listed as questionable — will not play against the Jets because of an ankle injury. And he’ll be joined by fellow running backs Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead on the inactive list.
That will leave Dion Lewis and Brandon Bolden as the only two backs dressed from a roster that has touted running back as its deepest position. But injuries have decimated that unit.
However, the good news is that Lewis has become the top back in this offense and proved last week that he’s prepared for a heavy workload by carrying the ball 24 times for 129 yards and a rushing touchdown to go along with 5 catches for 24 yards and a receiving touchdown. He also played in a season-high 51 snaps and showed no signs of fatigue.
So expect a happy and healthy Lewis to get a comfortable dose against the Jets with Bolden chipping in to give him a breather and possibly taking over if the score gets out of hand and home-field advantage appears in the bag.
