It had been over a decade since the New England Patriots dialed up a fake punt. The team successfully ended the special teams drought on Sunday versus the Miami Dolphins.
The Patriots called a fake punt on fourth and nine on their first drive in the first quarter. Safety Nate Ebner took a direct snap and ran along the right side to successfully pick up the first down.
New England capitalized on extending their drive. The Patriots finished the first-quarter series by scoring a touchdown.

It was New England’s first fake punt since 2004. The trick play was costly for the Patriots, though. Ebner sustained a knee injury on the run and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
