The New England Patriots made a collection of roster moves on Saturday, one day before their home game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Patriots placed tight end Greg Scruggs (knee) and linebacker Jonathan Freeny (shoulder) on injured reserve. New England filled the spots by calling up defensive end Geneo Grissom and defensive tackle Anthony Johnson from the practice squad.
Freeny was a key special team player in his second year with the Patriots, having appeared in all five games this season with four starts. The fifth-year linebacker started 11 of his 18 games with the Patriots over the past two seasons.
Scruggs has played 18 games in his four-year pro career, all as a backup. He spent the first three weeks on the Chicago Bears’ roster before coming over to New England to back up former Bears tight end Martellus Bennett.
