The New England Patriots were thin at running back on Sunday. Down Rex Burkhead and James White, the Patriots had to rely on starter Dion Lewis and seldom used runner Mike Gillislee. The situation wasn’t problematic for New England, thanks to a superb outing from Lewis.
Lewis has emerged as the Patriots’ best running back this season. He proved just that in a 37-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 16. Lewis rushed for a career-high 129 yards and 1 touchdown on 24 carries. He added 5 receptions for 24 yards and a touchdown through the air.
In a day that the Patriots needed Lewis, the versatile running back came through and answered.
Sunday’s win captured an NFL record eight-consecutive seasons with at least 12 wins for the Patriots.
Production on the ground gives 40-year-old quarterback Tom Brady some much-needed relief on offense. Brady said as much following the victory.
“Can’t say enough about what [Dion Lewis] has done,” Brady said of Lewis, per Mike Giardi of NBC Sports.
Lewis’ emergence is a great sign for the Patriots as the team continues their quest for back-to-back Super Bowl titles.
