The New England Patriots will be without Tom Brady for the first four games of the season. They’ll also be without one of Brady’s top blockers.
Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer is reportedly headed to the injured reserve according to a report from the Boston Globe’s Jim McBride. Vollmer has spent training camp on the physically unable to perform list with an undisclosed injury.
This doesn’t necessarily mean Vollmer will miss the entire 2016 season. The Patriots could place Vollmer on the IR with designation to return, but teams only have the option to do that with one player each season. The Patriots also could keep Vollmer on the PUP list, which would mean he cannot participate in practice for the first six weeks of the season. But moving him to the IR signifies that this injury might hold him out longer than that.
Sixth-year pro Marcus Cannon has served as Vollmer’s replacement during training camp. The fifth-round pick out of TCU started eight games for the Pats last season.
