Sebastian Vollmer’s chances of playing in 2016 are looking bleak.
The New England Patriots placed the tackle on the reserve-PUP list, according to ESPN.
Vollmer had shoulder surgery during the offseason and is also dealing with a hip injury. The tackle’s season is essentially over, but the Patriots are holding out hope that he’ll be available during the latter stages of the calendar.
Marcus Cannon will replace Vollmer at right tackle. Cannon has filled in admirably in Vollmer’s absence in the preseason.
Vollmer has been a staple along the Pats’ O-line since 2009. He is entering free agency after this season.
The veteran right tackle’s news happened simultaneously with Patriots RB Dion Lewis being placed on the PUP list.
It’ll be interesting to see how Jimmy Garoppolo performs in the regular season without a full cast of characters.
The Patriots’ defense will shoulder a bigger responsibility while key members on offense get healthy and off suspension.
