Safety Duron Harmon and the New England Patriots were not expected to lose to Jay Cutler and the Miami Dolphins, but they fell 20-27 in Miami on Monday Night Football.
The upset loss opens the door for the Pittsburgh Steelers to control the AFC. The Patriots’ postseason seeding now is in jeopardy. Harmon knew it, and he tried to get things turned around.
“Duron Harmon has seen just about enough from his defensive teammates,” wrote Mike Petraglia of CLNS Media, posting this video of Harmon screaming at his teammates in front of defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

“This was right after the Patriots allowed a Jarvis Landry TD,” wrote ESPN’s Michele Steele. “One defender told me ‘he was trying to get us mentally back into the game.’ Miami wouldn’t score again but enough damage had been done.”
The speech worked, because from there, the Patriots locked down. If he’d given that speech in the second quarter, maybe they could have won, but it was simply too little, too late.
Harmon himself explained a bit more after the loss.
“Just trying to play with a little more energy, that’s it,” Harmon said, per NESN’s Doug Kyed. “We weren’t playing the way we wanted to play. We weren’t playing consistent. Just everything we talk about doing as far as Patriot defense, we weren’t doing it, and that’s the reason they were able to keep scoring.
“But hats off to [the Dolphins]. They executed, and they executed at a high level today. It shouldn’t have to get to that [point where a speech is needed]. That’s the main thing. We’re all football players, we’re all adults. We all know we have to come to play each and every week. We knew how big of a game this was for them and how big of a game it was for us. It just seemed like they wanted it more than we did.”
