Even the NFL is catching election fever. Either that, or we’re all losing our minds as a result of the presidential campaign and are starting to hear things, like Giants quarterback Eli Manning invoking Donald Trump while calling out an audible.
David K. Li and Paul Schwartz for the New York Post have the video, and it sure sounds like Manning is yelling “Trump! Trump!” at the line of scrimmage. Plenty of people on Twitter reported they heard it too. Yet when the 13th-year veteran was asked about the election-themed audible, he denied the Republican nominee was part of the Giants game plan in their 17-10 victory against the Rams in London.
“No, no Trump call. No Trump call,” he told reporters. “We had something very similar, but no — no. It was not a Trump. So no, not an audible this week.”
Perhaps somebody should’ve asked him what then he was yelling exactly, because it sure sounds like Trump. Listen for yourself.
For what it’s worth, Tom Brady admitted on WEEI radio in Boston the Patriots have both audibles using the names of both Trump and Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton. Brady also went on to say that he doesn’t very much like when television picks up on the specific calls, presumably because it’s supposed to be a secret.
With that in mind, Manning’s denial could very well amount to nothing more than a quarterback trying to keep quiet about his team’s strategy. Sorry, Giants. Maybe ask the NFL for an apology for having such good microphones, because even people the next continent over know what it means when the offense audibles to Trump.
