The New York Jets have benched Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of Geno Smith. Despite head coach Todd Bowles saying after the team’s recent loss that the benching was only temporary, it was announced that Smith would be starting going forward.
Smith has the support of his teammates, especially wide receiver Brandon Marshall. One of the top receivers in the league, Marshall did use some pretty questionable phrasing when talking about Smith’s comeback and road to earning a starting role.
Marshall said that Smith has really grown and that it’s “amazing” to see him “really punch adversity in the face.”

This is, of course, notable for the not-so-long-ago locker room incident that saw former Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali punch Smith over a money dispute. That punch sidelined Smith for multiple games, caused him to have to have surgery on his fractured draw, and ultimately resulted in Enemkpali’s release.
The incident widely reported on and it can’t be far from Smith’s mind, given that it occurred just last year. It’s unclear if Marshall was making a joke or if this was just bad phrasing on his part.
