The New York Jets have benched quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of Geno Smith in Monday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Smith had not appeared in a game this season, but Fitzpatrick, the starter, is struggling big time. At the time of writing, the Jets trailed the Cardinals, 28-3, in the fourth quarter. There is little chance Smith can lead the team on a comeback given that deficit, but he’ll get his opportunity to show the Jets he can play.
When he exited the game, Fitzpatrick had completed 16 of 31 passes for 174 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He hasn’t been getting much assistance from his running game though, as the Jets rushed for just 28 yards total at the point Fitzpatrick was benched.
In four seasons and 31 games, Smith has completed 493 of 852 passes for 5,836 yards with 27 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. Smith’s accuracy troubles have been a huge issue, and only time will tell if he’s overcome them.
