The New York Jets seemed like they didn’t really know what they wanted to do after Ryan Fitzpatrick was benched in favor of Geno Smith in the team’s last game.
Head coach Todd Bowles originally said Fitzpatrick would remain the starter, and then it was announced that Smith would be taking over. How long will he get though before he himself runs out of time, as Fitzpatrick has? The Jets will give Smith a “fair chance to prove he’s [a] worthy starter,” according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
The Jets will next play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, and it’s unclear if Smith’s “fair chance” will include multiple games or what that situation is like. The wording is rather ambiguous, but after Fitzpatrick threw a ton of interceptions and struggled the way he did, the Jets sorely need an answer at quarterback.
Of course, there are two other guys on the roster behind Smith. Second-year thrower Bryce Petty and rookie Christian Hackenberg will be eager to prove to the Jets that they can be the future of the organization. It’s now Smith’s job to hold them off.
