Johnny Manziel told reporters Saturday at the National Fantasy Football Convention he’s heard from multiple NFL teams about a comeback, according to a report from Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.
The former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns started eight games in two seasons, but was released after the 2015 season and hasn’t been back in the NFL since. However, despite off-the-field trouble, he’s continued to claim he’s pursuing a return to the NFL.
Manziel rose to fame at Texas A&M during a Heisman Trophy-winning season as a redshirt freshman. His brash personality off-the-field gave him a confidence on the field that most viewed as infectious.
However, what made him a big name at Texas A&M was viewed as a liability in the NFL. Still, the Browns took a shot by taking him late in the first round.
Unfortunately, Manziel never left the lifestyle behind and he continued a reckless pattern of behavior that culminated in an order of protection being placed on him by his ex-girlfriend. Manziel’s agent even dropped him as a last-ditch effort to implore him to get help.
Whether or not Manziel has put that portion of his life behind him is yet to be determined. However, Manziel did get engaged to Bri Tiesi earlier this year and apparently teams are interested.
Manziel didn’t elaborate on which teams had been in contact with him or how far the conversation went. But if he decides to go the CFL route to prove he’s got his life together, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats currently own his rights.
