NFL competition committee reportedly will propose ban on leaping over line of scrimmage to block kicks
The NFL’s competition committee is looking to make another tweak to special teams, but it doesn’t have anything to do with kickoffs this time.
The committee will propose a ban prohibiting players from leaping over the line of scrimmage to block field goals and punts, according to The Washington Post’s Mark Maske.
This play has become more popular recently as players continue to exhibit their impressive athleticism. But questions have emerged regarding whether it’s fair for defenders to exploit the long snapper, who has his head down and cannot be touched during the play, by leaping directly over him to disrupt the kick.
This potential rule change wouldn’t make the Seattle Seahawks or New England Patriots happy, as they’ve pretty much mastered it.
