The Denver Broncos seem close to officially hiring Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to be their head coach, and on top of that, their own defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips, seems happy with the hire. Phillips is a well-regarded coordinator and many want him to remain in Denver.
It’s unclear if that would be Joseph’s plan, given he comes from a defensive background.
But one thing that is known is that Phillips is a hot commodity around the league. Reports continue to surface that Phillips is being targeted by other teams. Washington offensive coordinator and head coaching candidate Sean McVay is a fan of Phillips, and would consider him his “top option” for defensive coordinator if he lands the job coaching the Los Angeles Rams, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
McVay and the Rams seem close to putting a deal together. McVay is one of the top head coaching candidates this offseason. He’s younger though, and having someone with as much experience and history of success as Phillips makes a ton of sense.
Joseph will want to surround himself with good coordinators as well, but with his own defensive background he’ll need to make sure he’s on the same page as whoever joins his defensive staff.
