The Oakland Raiders have been making a concerted effort to give Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr more weapons this offseason. They added wide receiver and return specialist Cordarrelle Patterson and tight end Jared Cook in free agency, but Patterson has a suggestion for their current vacancy at running back: former teammate Adrian Peterson.
The two-time Pro Bowl return man tweeted at the seven-time Pro Bowl running back on Friday night encouraging him to “come join the dark side.” Peterson hasn’t publicly responded to the comment, but, at the right price, it would be an intriguing fit considering the Raiders’ former starter, Latavius Murray, signed to replace Peterson with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Raiders currently have $38.4 million in salary cap space to work with, so they can certainly afford Peterson. The issue at hand probably has more to do with how much of that space they’d be willing to invest in Peterson, who definitely wants to land with a contender such as the Raiders, and how much interest they have in a soon-to-be 32-year-old who carried the ball 37 times in 2016.
However, Peterson is healthy now and the Raiders have a need at the position. So perhaps their new return man is on to something with this.
