“Ryan Shazier continues to be hospitalized at UC Health’s University of Cincinnati Medical Center and has undergone a series of tests to evaluate his spine injury. He will continue to be monitored and treated by the neurosurgery experts at UC Medical Center until he has been cleared to return to Pittsburgh.
“It is expected that Ryan will undergo additional testing and evaluation over the next 24 to 48 hours, and he will then return to Pittsburgh to receive further evaluation and care at UPMC.”
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on earlier on Tuesday that Shazier has some movement in his lower extremities. The joint statement by Dr. Okonkwo and Dr. Cheng is the latest update on Shazier.
Shazier injured his back in the first quarter of Pittsburgh’s Week 13 win when he led with the crown of his helmet going in for a tackle on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Josh Malone. He was carted off the field and left the stadium in an ambulance.
The 2016 Pro Bowl linebacker is Pittsburgh’s defensive leader. Shazier leads the Steelers in tackles (68) and interceptions (3).
