Steelers safety Mike Mitchell calls NFL ‘a joke’

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell launched a string of tweets in disagreement with the NFL’s decision to suspend Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and Cincinnati Bengals safety George Iloka for one game.

Mitchell does have a point. New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski’s WWE-style elbow drop is not even in the same ballpark as Iloka’s helmet-to-helmet hit. Smith-Schuster’s crack block wasn’t as bad either. Smith-Schuster’s decision to taunt Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict following his hit was uncalled for.

All three rule infractions are not equal. The NFL’s decision to suspend all three players for one game for their separate incidents signifies that all three were equal.

Gronkowski, Iloka and Smith-Schuster all deserve to be punished. What Gronkowski did was the worst of the three, followed by Smith-Schuster and then Iloka.

The NFL is trying to make the game safer. At the same time, there needs to be an upgraded process on how to punish players. Perhaps some written bylaws as opposed to making up punishments week-by-week.
