According to reports, former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison may have flown into Massachusetts.
“Just got word of a James Harrison sighting at Logan Airport this morning,” wrote Steve Burton of WBZ. “Patriots Nation, that would be awesome.”
The implication, of course, is that he’s meeting with the Patriots. Harrison was cut by the Steelers after playing about 40 snaps all season. He recorded just 1 sack and publicly talked about wishing he had not signed with the team.
Before that, there was talk that the Steelers were saving the 39-year-old pass rusher for the playoffs. Clearly, they’re not doing that. He already has cleared waivers.
If he has anything at all left in the tank, this could be the perfect time to join the Patriots. He’d still have a few weeks to get acclimated and learn the defense before the playoffs start. He likely wouldn’t cost much. He’d only have to play at a high level for a handful of games. Yes, he’s old, but could he kick it in gear for a month of football if it meant one more Super Bowl ring before he retires?
He’d have plenty of motivation. That’s a much better way to go out than getting cut before the season ends. Plus, he could potentially get his revenge if the Patriots and Steelers square off in the AFC Championship Game. His very presence and desire could drive a team that is already a Super Bowl favorite.
It’s very important to stress that nothing has happened yet. The rumor that he was at Logan isn’t even confirmed.
“There’s a rumor floating around that former Steelers LB James Harrison was seen at Logan Airport this morning in Boston,” noted NFL Update. “Still unconfirmed.”
