Sammie Coates was back at Pittsburgh Steelers practice Friday, catching passes with the hand he has stitches in.
It was a positive sign for a player who had missed the previous two practices with cuts in his hand. He told reporters he’s waiting to find out if he’ll be cleared for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.
If he is, he could take over the targets of Markus Wheaton, who officially has been ruled out with a shoulder injury by the Steelers. Coates will need to find a way to replicate his production, which totaled 139 yards and 2 touchdowns on 6 catches in the 31-13 win against the Jets last Sunday, while eliminating the drops that tarnished what would have been a great day.
It would be a challenge with the issues he’s dealing with regarding his hands, but he’s still hoping to play.
