The Pittsburgh Steelers could be in serious trouble.
The Steelers are already struggling on the road against the lowly Miami Dolphins and now they could be without Ben Roethlisberger.
Roethlisberger went to the locker room late in the first half with a knee injury, according to Burt Lauten. Roethlisberger was hurt while scrambling to his right to avoid a pass rusher. He wasn’t taken down on the play, but he did have a defender diving at his feet.
He is officially questionable to return.
Roethlisberger had thrown for only 41 yards and an interception before exiting the game. Backup quarterback Landry Jones entered the game in relief of Roethlisberger. The third-year pro has experience in this situation. Zach Mettenberger is the third-string quarterback. He went 1-1 in two games last season in Roethlisberger’s place and threw for 513 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions last season.
Update (3:01 p.m. ET): Roethlisberger has returned to the game with nine minutes left in the third quarter. The Steelers currently trail Miami, 16-8.
