Artie Burns plans to make his NFL starting debut on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
The No. 25 pick in this spring’s draft told Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday that he is going to start for the Pittsburgh Steelers at cornerback in place of veteran William Gay.
Gay has started 83 of the 135 games he’s played in nine years with the Steelers. But he’s 31 now and has struggled somewhat in pass coverage, with the first-round rookie waiting in the wings to start eventually.
The Miami product has appeared in all seven games so far for the 4-3 Steelers, who sit alone in first place of the AFC North. He has totaled 18 tackles and 4 passes defensed for the league’s 26th-ranked pass defense.
The 3-4 Ravens come in ranked 18th in passing yards per game.
