University of Pittsburgh Medical Center released an update on Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Ryan Shazier.
“Ryan Shazier remains hospitalized at UPMC recovering from the spinal stabilization surgery performed last week by UPMC neurosurgeons and Steelers team physicians Drs. David Okonkwo and Joseph Maroon. Mr. Shazier has started physical rehabilitation as part of his recovery process. Further updates will be provided by UPMC.”
Pittsburgh’s starting inside linebacker injured his back in the first quarter of the team’s 23-20 Week 13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Shazier led with the crown of his helmet attempting to tackle Bengals receiver Josh Malone. He was carted off the field and left the stadium in an ambulance to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Shazier was transferred from University of Cincinnati Medical Center to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on Dec. 6.
Last week, the Steelers honored Shazier with several gestures, including wearing cleats in his likeness and placing his helmet at midfield following the team’s win against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Steelers placed Shazier on injured reserve on Dec. 12.
