Jarryd Hayne, an Australian rugby star who tried briefly to make the jump to the NFL as a running back with the San Fransisco 49ers, has been accused of rape. He denies the allegations.
It’s important to note that this is a civil case, not a criminal case.
“The Santa Clara County District Attorney reviewed potential criminal charged but decided not to proceed based on insufficient evidence in October 2016,” reported NBC’s Mike Florio. “In the lawsuit, the plaintiff claims that she delayed coming forward for several months, due to fear.”
Thus far, Hayne and his legal team have vehemently denied that he did anything wrong. Hayne is no longer in the NFL, having returned to playing rugby overseas, but his lawyer put out the following statement, per ESPN:
“Mr Hayne and his management are aware of recent media speculation in relation to a civil complaint filed in the United States of America making certain allegations in relation to an event which allegedly occurred in 2015 whilst playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Mr Hayne has not been served with any proceedings or formal complaint relating to the incident.
“Mr Hayne previously addressed a complaint made to the District Attorney’s office in the County of Santa Clara, California in 2016 and the District Attorney did not proceed any further with the matter due to insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations. Mr Hayne provided all reasonable assistance to the District Attorney with that investigation.
“Mr Hayne unequivocally and vehemently denies the allegations which are the subject of the civil complaint. Mr Hayne will not be making any further comment in relation to this matter.”
Hayne, a superstar in rugby circles when he came to the United States, ended his NFL career with 79 yards from scrimmage, zero touchdowns, and three fumbles.
