Blaine Gabbert is winning the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback competition based on health.
The Niners announced on Thursday that Colin Kaepernick will not be available when the team takes on the Denver Broncos on Saturday.

Kaepernick missed San Francisco’s preseason debut versus the Houston Texans due to arm fatigue. The sixth-year quarterback’s arm apparently is still not ready for live-game action.
Gabbert will make his second straight start for the 49ers on Saturday. By all accounts he’s leading the team’s quarterback competition due to Kaepernick’s health issues.
Niners coach Chip Kelly said that the plan is to have Kaepernick available for the team’s third preseason game. Normally, third preseason games are a dress rehearsal for the regular season. In Kaepernick’s case, it’ll be his best chance to prove that he’s the best QB on San Francisco’s roster.
