McCray, 25, was traded to the Seahawks on Sept. 3 for an undisclosed draft pick, but that transaction was made void Monday after he failed the physical. The 6-foot, 210-pound DB signed with the 49ers in 2014 after going undrafted out of Catawba College that year. He had 22 tackles in 22 games during the last two seasons but played mostly on special teams, where he was a standout.
But McCray had not played in a regular-season game since a loss to the St.Louis Rams (now L.A. Rams) on Nov. 1, when he injured his knee. He was placed on injured reserve and didn’t return to action in the final eight games of the season.
During the preseason, McCray played mostly on special teams because of a crowded San Francisco secondary featuring Antoine Bethea, Tramaine Brock, Eric Reid, Marcus Cromartie, Jaquiski Tratt and Dontae Johnson. He had six total tackles in the 49ers’ final preseason game against the San Diego Chargers and played most of his snaps in the secondary, a sign that he was set to be cut.
