The details about how John Lynch got the San Francisco 49ers’ general manager job are almost as preposterous as the fact that he even got the job to begin with.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the 49ers will make Lynch their next GM. But there’s much more to this story. Schefter reports that Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan pretty much got Lynch hired. Yes, Shanahan hasn’t even been officially hired as San Francisco’s next head coach.
According to Schefter, Lynch called Shanahan approximately a week ago and volunteered for the job. Shanahan apparently thought that was a good idea and must have pushed the idea to the top of the organization.
Lynch spent Thursday at 49ers CEO Jed York’s house, met with the team Thursday and Friday and then was flown out by the team to San Diego to attend a family function. He accepted the job Sunday.
Let’s recap: Lynch woke up one day and though it’d be a good idea if he became San Francisco’s GM, even though he has no front office experience. The FOX NFL commentator called a head coach who hasn’t been hired yet to pitch him the idea. Now, the nine-time Pro Bowl safety is the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers.
But wait, there’s even more. Lynch didn’t have many nice things to say about his new colleague very recently, adding even more confusion into this decision.
John Lynch said "Kyle comes off arrogant in his interviews" – I've heard that as well. Hasn't come off well during this process

Lynch’s harsh criticism clearly didn’t phase Shanahan, as they’ll be working together very soon.
It’s safe to say this is one of the most bizarre hirings in NFL history.
