The 49ers addressed that void by signing veteran Christian Ponder to a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.
The former first-round pick hasn’t taken a regular season snap since 2014, which was his final season with the Minnesota Vikings. Ponder disappointed with the Vikings, throwing 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions during his tenure.
Ponder led the Vikings to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth in 2012, but he is 4-15-1 in his other 20 starts. He will likely serve as a backup behind Blaine Gabbert for the time being and could be in a battle with rookie Jeff Driskel for the third-string job upon Kaepernick’s return.
