This season has not started in any way how the Carolina Panthers would have liked.
They are coming off of a bye week and quarterback Cam Newton talked to the media about what the team needs to do to get back on track.
“We need to get that feeling back in Charlotte that people fear [the Panthers],” Newton said to the media via the Associated Press’ Steve Reed.
Newton also said that the bye week helped him focus on “getting better and stronger,” the Panthers needs to win at a “rapid pace,” and they don’t appear to be as motivated as the 2014 team that turned a 3-8-1 start into a division championship.
The defending NFC champions are sitting at the bottom of the league with a 1-5 record. The defense doesn’t look as strong and Newton has taken a lot of punishment. He missed their loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a concussion.
Newton has also not played as well as he did last season. In 2015 he threw 35 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. This season he has already thrown 6 interceptions and only 8 touchdowns.
The year following the Super Bowl is never kind to the loser and the tradition is holding true for the Panthers. They didn’t lose a game last season until after Christmas and their defense was unstoppable.
This season that defense, especially the defensive backs, is a big reason they looking up at almost the entire NFL in the standings.
