The cut down continues in Tennessee.
NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport is reporting that the Titans have released wide receiver Justin Hunter.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise even though he did play a decent amount vs. the Miami Dolphins in the Titans final preseason game.
Hunter has regressed in each season he has been with Tennessee. His rookie year he started 14 games, 12 games in 2014 and only nine last season. He has never caught 30 passes or eclipsed 500 yards in a season as a pro.
That means the Titans’ 2015 number-two overall pick Marcus Mariota will be working with two brand new receivers as his top targets this season.
Rishard Matthews spent the first four seasons of his career with the Dolphins. After three season in which he only started 14 total games, he started 11 games in Miami last season.
Consequently that turned out to be his most productive season as a pro. Matthews caught 43 passes for 663 yards and four touchdowns.
The other starter looks like it will be the Titans fifth-round pick from the 2016 draft, Tajae Sharpe. He has been very impressive so far in the preseason, even leading the team in receiving against the Panthers.
In his senior season at UMass he tallied 111 catches for 1319 yards and 5 touchdowns, averaging 11.9 yards per reception.
